| Driving and energetic tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett makes a welcome return to the club with his quartet in a programme of music featuring the music of the late, great Tubby Hayes and some of his contemporaries.
In 2007, Simon was the 'Rising Star' at the BBC Jazz Awards and in 2009 his album 'Sienna Red' was voted Record Of The Year in Jazz Journal’s Critics Poll. He is also a member of The Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra, as well as being arguably the world’s leading authority on Tubby Hayes and his musical legacy. He has recently been responsible for verifying a “lost” session by Tubby and arranging for it to be issued on Candid Records, (voted 5 stars by Jazzwise magazine) and is currently writing a biography of the man and his music. “He brings a commitment and hard swing to his playing that I find most exhilarating. He is steeped in the history of jazz, composes catchy jazz themes and is a great communicator with audiences. Great as he is now, I am sure he will develop into something quite formidable in years to come” Alan Barnes Joining Simon for what is guaranteed to be a night of steaming bop and sultry ballads will be some of Britain’s top jazz musicians, John Critchinson, piano, Dave Green, bass and Clark Tracey, drums. Tickets: £13 Non-members, £10 members, £6 students |
