Martin Speake Quartet
8.30pm Monday 21st March 2011
We extend a warm welcome to the excellent Martin Speake on his first ever visit as leader to the club. His alto playing style has often been compared to that of the Cool School of performers such as Lee Konitz and Paul Desmond but that would be to understate his talents as both player and composer. He has many diverse CDs to his name, such as the self-explanatory “Exploring Standards” and “Charlie Parker”, as well his work with Nikki Iles in the Secret Quartet on two albums of self-composed material, 2001’s “Secret” and the follow-up last year, “Bloor Street”, of which The Scotsman said “It has been almost a decade since the Secret Quartet made their first recording, but they have reconvened in glorious fashion on this intelligent, beautifully crafted follow-up”.
Joining Martin will be Mike Outram, guitar, Chris Hyson, double bass and Dave Wickins, drums with what promises to be an entertainingly diverse programme of music covering all aspects of his work so far. To hear a sample Martin’s work on “Exploring Standards” follow the link to his website where you will find details of all his CDs to date: http://www.martinspeake.co.uk/store.html Buy tickets on the door or in advance: Non members (£13) Members (£10) Concessions (£6) |
