Bobby Wellins and Dave Newton Quartet
8.30pm Tuesday 16th November
Featuring:
Bobby Wellins tenor sax Dave Newton piano Steve Brown drums Andy Clyndert bass What better way to start life in our new venue than with two of Britain’s most respected musicians? Bobby Wellins’ rich tone compliments his lyrical tenor sax playing and this combination has seen him consistently voted to the number one spot on his instrument over the last fifty years and the people he has played with reads like a veritable “Who’s Who?” of British jazz, from Stan Tracey on down. Likewise David Newton, a superbly technically gifted and similarly lyrical pianist, whose main influences of Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and Erroll Garner can clearly be heard in his playing, has been at the top of the British Jazz Awards polls for the last twenty years. His sympathetic and melodic style has also seen him much in demand as a backing pianist for many of the world’s top vocalists, such as Stacey Kent, Marion Montgomery and Carol Kidd. He brings with him his two regular sideman, Andy Clyndert on double bass and Steve Brown on drums, whose superb musicianship means that their contributions are very much in demand and we are indeed fortunate to have them playing at the club. Tickets (available at the door): £13 (Members £10, Students £6) |
